Instagram’s Carousel ad format is coming to Instagram Stories

Like Instagram Type Mode, here’s another exciting update to Instagram Stories.

Instagram has announced plans to bring its Carousel Ad format into Stories. As a result, Story ads will no longer be limited to one piece of media. Instead, Instagram Story carousel ads can include three.

Director of Product Marketing Susan Rose said: “It’s a feature that was requested from businesses and advertisers, given the power that they’ve seen through organic stories with multiple pieces of content.”

Instagram’s new ‘type mode’ lets you add text-only pages to your stories

Instagram Story carousel ads isn’t the only Stories update the platform is introducing.

Instagram has started to roll out a new feature that allows users add text-based pages to their Stories — no photos or videos required. In Instagram Type Mode, users can choose from a range of colourful backgrounds and text styles. In addition, they can add any stickers or GIFs in Instagram Type Mode before sharing to Stories.

Facebook will start prioritising local news in user feeds

Facebook announced in a blog post this week that the social network will be working to prioritise local news. This arrives with efforts to put a greater emphasis on friends’ and “high quality” outlets’ content.

This is part of the social giant’s larger mission to take a step away from divisive and/or politicised national publishers. Instead, they aim to make time spent on the site more “valuable”.

A different type of update to Instagram Story carousel ads, Facebook is clearly focusing on its social impact.

Instagram now allows businesses to schedule their posts

Instagram made a change to its API this week that allows businesses to schedule posts ahead of time. This is a feature that social media marketers have wanted for a while. Previously, business users have had to use unofficial means to plan and post their content. For example, tools that send out push notification reminders to publish a post.

This new feature will allow social media software applications to access the functionality. For instance, these include HootSuite, Buffer and Sprout Social.

This feature joins Instagram Story carousel ads and Type Mode to expand user experience.

Facebook’s user count declines as it prioritises well-being

Again, unlike Instagram Story carousel ads, Facebook is taking a more social approach.

In its effort to improve user well-being, Facebook has reduced the viral videos on its site. As a result, the social network has already reduced its user count. However, CEO Mark Zuckerberg seems willing to accept this in his pursuit to “fix Facebook”.

In Facebook’s Q4 2017 earnings report, he announced: “Already last quarter, we made changes to show fewer viral videos to make sure people’s time is well spent. In total, we made changes that reduced time spent on Facebook by roughly 50 million hours every day.”

This showed up as a reduction from 185 million to 184 million daily active users in the US & Canada region. Amazingly, that’s the first time Facebook has ever reported a user count decline in any market.
