The online landscape is ever-changing. New devices, platforms and features are introduced on what feels like a daily basis. We’ve put together a roundup of five of this week’s biggest stories to help you stay ahead of the curve!

Youtube launches new Snapchat clone

The popular Stories format — first introduced by Snapchat and then adopted by Instagram and Facebook — is now making its way to YouTube as a new feature called Reels. The new video format will allow creators to express themselves and engage with subscribers without having to post a full video.

The feature is currently only available to a handful of creators during the testing period. Upon its official launch, it will be accessible through the Community tab which appears on channels with over 10,000 subscribers.

Snapchat kick starts new redesign

In a bid to conquer Instagram and revive its user base, Snapchat is rolling out a more personalised redesign. Rather than sorting content in reverse chronological order, Snapchat will now prioritise content based on what each person watches most, as well as placing a divide between content from friends and content from publishers.

Snapchat CEO Evan Spiegel wrote: “We are separating the social from the media, and taking an important step forward towards strengthening our relationships with our friends and our relationships with the media.”

Instagram reaches 25-million business profile users

This week, Instagram announced that it now has 25 million active business profiles, an increase from 15 million in July. This significant milestone demonstrates how many businesses now see Instagram as an important way to connect with customers.

The social network also reported that more than 80 percent of Instagram accounts follow a business, with 200 million users visiting a business profile every day. If you’re not on Instagram already, now is the time to hop on the bandwagon!

Twitter tests new feature that shows how many are ‘talking about’ tweets

Twitter is testing a new feature that displays the number of users who are “talking about” a popular tweet. Rather than appearing in the app itself, the metric appears under popular tweets when they are embedded elsewhere on the web, and replaces both the retweet and replies totals with one cumulative total.

According to Dan Jackson, a Twitter spokesperson, this is part of an ongoing attempt to explore new ways to provide more social context around tweets.

Instagram is testing a number of new features that may be rolling out over the coming weeks. These include: an official “regram” button similar to retweets on Twitter; a new GIF tool for Instagram Stories; and an archive feature that will allow users to save their Stories within the app before they disappear.
