Google I/O 2018 – Our Biggest Takeaways

Conference season has been pretty exciting this year, especially as the developer world competes to be the leading brand in artificial intelligence. Almost every revelation from Google I/O 2018 involved some integration with AI; Google has even rebranded its research division to Google AI.

Here are our biggest takeaways from Google I/O 2018.

Google Assistant

Communication with Google Assistant is going to become much more fluid – and yes, you’ve guessed it – more conversational! In order for it to pick up commands, you’ll only need to address Google once in the conversation, preferably at the start. In addition, you’ll now be able to ask more than one question in the conversation.

Google Photos

Google Photos already offer a variety of optimisation options, but we learned at Google I/O 2018 that this is going one step further. Now, Google Photos will recommend a series of improvements based on the photo itself. Quick fix suggestions will include rotations, brightness or touches of colour.

This update links in with Google’s strategy of becoming the central hub for all of your photos. This data increase will help to improve the user experience alongside the increase in data. In turn, crucially, this will allow Google to improve its technology.

Smart Displays

This is still a question mark to some after the Google I/O 2018 event. However, Google announced that it intends to improve Google Assistant by including a visual element. This will exist via a partnership with YouTube.

The upgrade and introduction of Smart Displays will enhance the user experience, allowing a much regular home use. We’ve all in some way become accustomed to having smart technology in our living rooms; Google intends to add to this experience.

Google Maps

We mentioned this in our latest Digital Deep Dive. The last big announcement from Google I/O 2018 was an exciting new feature for Google Maps. The feature allows users to explore their areas, staying up to date with new restaurant launches and recommended events relevant to their interests.
