Establish your goal before anything else.

Audience

Who are you trying to target?

Identify your main customers. Do you want to target them or a new group?

Draw up a buyer persona, a profile of the exact type of person you would like to see this video.

Buyer personas often involve the person’s demographic, challenges/’pain points’, and motivations.

Message

What do you want to communicate to your audience with this video?

Your message needs to be clear, direct and memorable. Make sure it runs throughout the entire video.

Time

Put your best 8 seconds first in your video, as this is the time your viewers will be most engaged for.

Choose the right run-time for your video, depending on what the video is for and where you will be distributing it.

Script & Storyboard

This is where you get your ideas down on paper to aid the production of your video.

Your script will outline the narration, dialogue or voiceover of your video. It will greatly help editors when they’re dealing with the footage later.

Your storyboard outlines what you envision each shot of your video will look like.

Logistics

Budget: This may be yours or your client’s. Make sure your video is realistic to your budget.

Remember, when thinking about budget it’s a great idea to consider using a video production company. A good team is used to producing the highest-quality video content possible within your budget.

Set: This only applies to live-action video production.

Will you need a studio or are you shooting on location? Both have their own costs, e.g. travelling to locations.

Also think about props, lighting and sound equipment you may need.

2. Production

 

The production stage is where you finally get to make the video that’s been in yours and your team’s heads for weeks, possibly even months!

However, there are some important things to remember…

Make sure you’ve got all the right kit, and you’ve brought charged spares just in case.

Equipment will be one of the things detailed on your production schedule.

Time

Ensure you have enough time to set up, film and pack up again.

Health and Safety

You need to keep your filming environment as safe for everyone as possible. In particular, you’re responsible for your actors who you’ve hired to help you with your video.

Leading on from the above, keep everyone on the set’s contact details safe so you always know where they are.

 

When you’ve got all your raw footage, upload it to a safe hard drive AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. You wouldn’t want to lose all that footage after working so hard to get it!

Now all that’s left is to edit. But it’s not as quick a process as it might sound!

 

3. Post-Production

In the stages of video production, post-production begins after filming is wrapped and editing begins on your material.

Post-production usually involves picture editing, sound editing, adding music, visual effects, words and graphics, and the creation of various shorter videos such as a trailer or a version for social media.
